What is a link locker?
A link locker is a page that sits between someone and a URL. They complete a step you defined — visiting your channel, entering a code, agreeing to something — and then they get the link. This page explains the category properly, including when you should use something else.
The mechanics are simple. You have a URL you would rather not publish directly: a font pack, a preset bundle, a mod, a project file, a spreadsheet template. Instead of posting it, you post a link to a locker page. Anyone who opens that page sees what they are getting and what they need to do first. When they finish, the real URL is handed over.
The reason to do this is almost never that the file is secret. It is that an unprotected URL travels without you. Someone reposts it on a forum, someone else re-hosts it with their own name on it, and the video that produced it gets none of the credit and none of the traffic. A locker attaches a small, visible cost to the link — one that is trivial for someone who actually followed your work and slightly annoying for someone scraping links in bulk.
What a locker is not
It is not access control. Anyone who completes the steps gets the URL, and they can paste it anywhere afterwards. If a file must not be shared, a link locker is the wrong tool and always will be — use signed URLs with a short expiry, or a platform with real accounts.
It is not a paywall. No money changes hands, no account exists, no receipt is issued.

Link locker vs the alternatives
Four tools get confused with each other constantly. The distinction is what you are asking the visitor to give up.

The honest summary: a link locker occupies a narrow band. It costs a visitor about fifteen seconds, so it works for things worth fifteen seconds and nothing more. Point one at something people only mildly want and they will close the tab; point one at something they came specifically to find and they will barely notice it.
When not to use a link locker
This section exists because most pages about link lockers are written by people selling link lockers. Here are the cases where you should not use one, including ours.
When the content needs to rank
A crawler cannot complete steps. Put a locker in front of an article and search engines see the locker, not the article. Every Keyway unlock page is noindex and excluded from our sitemaps for exactly this reason — it must not compete with what it protects. Gate downloads, not documents.
When the file is genuinely sensitive
A locker is a speed bump, not a lock. Anyone who completes it holds the real URL. Client work, unreleased material, personal data — none of these belong behind one.
When your audience is small and warm
If you are sharing something with two hundred people who already follow you, the locker costs you goodwill and buys you almost nothing. Just post the link.
When you would need to lie to make it work
If your plan requires telling visitors that a subscription was verified, the plan does not work — not with Keyway and not honestly with anything else. Invite the subscribe; do not fake the check.
If a link locker is the right tool
Three things separate a good one from a bad one, and all three are visible to a visitor within about two seconds:
- Does it load immediately? A locker that shows a spinner, an ad and a countdown before revealing a button has decided its advertising revenue matters more than your visitor's patience.
- Is it honest about the steps? "Verifying your subscription…" over a three-second animation is a lie with a progress bar on it.
- What happens to the visitor's data? Many free lockers are advertising businesses; the download is the product they use to collect an audience. Read the privacy policy of anything you put in front of your own community.

Common questions about link lockers
Is a link locker the same as a URL shortener?
No. A shortener maps one URL to another and forwards immediately — its job is brevity. A link locker adds a page in between where a visitor does something before the forward happens. You can have both (a Keyway link is also short) but the shortening is incidental. The real difference is that a shortener never withholds the destination, and a locker always does until its conditions are met.
Is a link locker the same as a paywall?
No. A paywall exchanges money for access and involves a payment processor, an account and a receipt. A link locker exchanges attention — a visit, a confirmation, a code — and typically involves none of those. The two solve different problems: a paywall monetises, a locker directs.
Do link lockers hurt SEO?
They can, if you point one at content you want indexed — a crawler cannot complete steps, so it sees the locker page instead of your content. Keyway sets noindex on every unlock page and excludes them from its sitemaps precisely so they do not compete with the destination. Use a locker for a download or a resource, never for a page you want to rank.
Can visitors bypass a link locker?
It depends entirely on the implementation. If the destination URL is present in the page source, in a JavaScript variable or in an API response, then yes — trivially, with devtools. Keyway keeps it server-side and reveals it only in a redirect header after the server has confirmed the conditions were met, which means there is nothing in the page to inspect. No locker can stop someone who unlocks it legitimately from resharing the destination afterwards, and no honest tool will claim otherwise.
Are link lockers allowed by YouTube, Discord and the rest?
Sending someone to your page is fine. Requiring them to subscribe, follow or like in exchange for something is not — every major platform prohibits incentivised engagement, and several have specifically removed the APIs that made verifying it possible. That is why Keyway treats social steps as visits and never claims to have verified a subscription.
